BUCYRUS―Three cows are on the loose in the city of Bucyrus.

Bucyrus Police received a call from the manager at Producers Livestock in the 2000 block of Plymouth Street that he needed assistance in locating and rounding up three cows that had gotten loose shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday evening.

A resident in the 300 block of Clinton Street reported three or four cows in their yard shortly after the cows escaped from Producers Livestock. The trio was moving in the vicinity of the soccer fields at Harmon Park then ran into the wooded area east of Harmon Park at that time.

Bucyrus Police Chief Dave Koepke said the owner had been taking the cows to the Producers Livestock to sell at auction and requested they be shot on site if located by officers, as they can cause property damage and danger to motorists on nearby roadways.

Two of the three cows are believed to have been shot by officers but it is still unknown if they are alive.

At 5:25 a.m. Thursday, officers received a report that a cow was on the loose near the Arby’s parking lot in the 100 block of Plymouth Street.

“To my knowledge, they have not been located,” Koepke said. “The rain is making it more difficult to find them since cows typically lay down when it rains.”

He said the auction the cows were supposed to be a part of was underway Thursday morning as scheduled.

“The owner says the cows are each between 1,200 and 1,300 pounds. Residents should not approach them if seen and call our officers instead,” Koepke said. “We were not yet given a description of the cows or the breed.”

If anyone spots a cow in the city, call the Bucyrus Police Department at 419-562-1006.
