BUCYRUS — Law enforcement officers are investigating an apparent breaking and entering at an elementary school.

Officers with the Bucyrus Police Department responded to Bucyrus Elementary School shortly after 8:30 a.m. Sunday to a report of open windows at the school.

According to a report by BPD, and confirmed by BPD Capt. Greg Stevens, a window was found open on the east side of the building near the playground. A responding officer looked in the window and found school supplies scattered in the classroom and multiple drawers open.

The officer then located a second window that was open.

Due to summer cleaning, officers found it difficult to confirm if any items were missing.

Two officers cleared the building without finding anyone inside.

While investigating the exterior of the building, officers found multiple toys but could not confirm if they were taken from the school.

Bucyrus City Schools Superintendent Matt Chrispin was contacted. He said he would check with maintenance and some teachers to try to gain more information as to what may have been taken.

The officers said future plans include examining video surveillance of the school.

The matter remains under investigation.
