One family is probably happy a Bucyrus police officer stopped by their home in the early morning hours on Wednesday.

Patrolman John Seif helped two adults and an infant escape their burning home by the front porch roof of the house. The family had been alerted to the fire by a smoke detector in the home.

The Bucyrus Fire Department responded to the call at 535 W. Charles St. around 1:40 Wednesday morning. Samples were taken from the fire but the cause is still undetermined.

Seif had been treated and released from the hospital for smoke inhalation.
