A Level 2 snow emergency is nothing but a minor inconvenience when it comes to the once-in-a-year opportunity for Rotary pancakes and sausage. The Bucyrus Rotary Club’s 42nd Annual Pancake Day was Saturday and not even the snow whipped around by howling winds that limited visibility outside could limit appetites inside.
“It’s been steady the whole time,” said Tami Tima, one of the local Rotarians who have invested a lot of time in organizing and working the event. “We still get people trickling in at 1 o’clock.”
Tima said she had plenty of help getting all the food and entertainment together.
“I’ve been here since five. All my volunteers came in at 5:30. We started serving breakfast at 7. The cheerleaders out here at Bucyrus have been great,” Tima said. “The Internet Club which are the kids at Wynford have just been absolutely wonderful. Nikki French who is the head of the choir here at Bucyrus has helped out with all the entertainment if it wasn’t for her, we’d never get it done.”
A new twist at this year’s Pancake Day was a pancake eating contest which pitted one student each from Bucyrus, Colonel Crawford and Wynford high schools. The contestants had three minutes to devour all the flapjacks they could. The winner got to claim half of a basket filled with cash for a special project at their school.
The other half of that cash goes to the Rotary Club’s Strive Program.
The Rotarians had a goal of $1,500 for the event. All of the money raised goes back into the community through various Rotary projects.
