Galion’s Northside Farmers Market will open on May 5 at its new location in Heise Park. The popular market was formerly located in front of the Galion KFC. However, the increased traffic and a lack of space for vendors and parking led to a need to change the location.
Nikki Ward, administrative assistant for the City of Galion, announced last week that vendors will set up in the park in the grassy area around Frank’s Shelter and the adjacent parking lot.
“We hope the park is more accessible. There will be more space for vendors and more parking for customers, as well as more space for some events we’re planning,” Ward said.
The rules and details for the market have been finalized and an advisory committee, consisting of vendors, has been put into place. Applications are also being completed so the market can accept EBT cards.
Dave Riedel, a local fruit producer, said using Heise Park will be an improvement. “It will be a lot safer, number one, and exposure to the walkers will make a big difference.”
“It’s a good move,” said Mendy Sellman, owner of Rus-Men Farms. “Using the park will bring urban and rural people together. I call it ‘community unity.’”
The new Northside will open on Tuesday, May 5, and continue every Tuesday through the fall. The new time is 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Organizers are currently looking for more vendors, including all types of produce, herbs, honeys and syrups, and any homemade goods.
They want to keep the focus on produce, but the last Tuesday of each month will be an expanded market where local crafters and craftsmen will be invited to showcase their products. They’re also looking for musical individuals or groups who are interested in playing at the market.
Interested vendors can contact the Mayor’s office at 419-468-1857.
