CRESTLINE — Due to the illness of one of its members, Crestline Village Council lacked a quorum to be able to vote on legislation during its regular meeting Monday evening.
A special meeting has been scheduled for Monday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m.
The three pieces of legislation to be voted on include a resolution to confirm the mayor’s appointment of Jordan Swart as a full-time police officer with the Crestline Police Department.
Swart said he has wanted to become a police officer since he was a little boy and has been part of the Shelby Police Department. He will begin as a patrol officer April 1 pending the passing of the resolution by council March 25.
A resolution to allow the village administrator to sign necessary documents to facilitate the Livingston Avenue sanitary sewer extension project and commit to funds for the project will also be considered at the special meeting along with a resolution to confirm the mayor’s appointment of Amanda Fruth as a part-time administrative support person with the village.
The second reading of an ordinance to amend and supplement a section of the village codified ordinances was approved.
A finance committee meeting occurred prior to the regular meeting. It was decided that legislation will be created to eliminate the position of captain on the village police department and continue with eight to nine officers, the chief and one sergeant. It was also approved to allow the chief to raise wages by $2 per hour for all the positions.
“Since word has gotten out that we were trying to do this, I have received multiple phone calls from very good candidates wanting to come and work for our department,” Crestline Police Chief Jeff Shook said. “I think this pay raise is necessary to retain good officers and to have a strong police force.”
Legislation will also be created to allow Village Administrator John Rostash to offer a pay range of $27 to $30 per hour for the water/sewer superintendent position Rostash said desperately needs to be filled.
Both issues will be voted on by the entire council at the next regular meeting April 1.
