Dollar General became the new in New Washington Saturday morning when village officials held an official ribbon cutting and grand opening of the store.

Having its soft weekend during New Washington’s Hatchery Festival, the Dollar General chain of stores rolled out the welcome carpet officially at 8 A.M. Saturday morning handing out gift cards to the first fifty customers, a gift bag for everyone, as well as punch and cookies to welcome the new customers.

The move to get the Dollar General chain of stores into New Washington was spearheaded by former Mayor Tom Niedermeier, who was pleased with the opening of the store saying, “I’m a believer in New Washington, and I felt this would be a real benefit for New Washington. And I felt that this would be a real benefit for the village, and for Dollar General.”

“It took me quite a while to convince them of that,”  Neidermeier continued, “but I believe that they are seeing what I told them about New Washington is true. It takes a mayor and a council to do that and they made it happen.”

District Manager Matt Lewis who was on hand to greet the customers as they filed into the store explained, “Currently there is nothing different in the New Washington store than what other Dollar General store locations have. The chain of stores is company owned so we try to make them as similar as possible.”

Employing eleven, the 7,000 square foot store located at the site of the old Buckeye Central High school follows the “Store of the Future” floor layout plan for Dollar General chain of stores.
