BUCYRUS — The Wynford Local Schools Board of Education added a new member Thursday evening.
Ryan Pelter replaced Fred Hendricks on the board. Hendricks moved out of the district and no longer was eligible to be on the board.
The board members expressed their excitement to be able to work with Pelter, to which he said, “I appreciate the opportunity, and I am looking forward to being a board member.”
“I was able to participate last year in the levy campaign and it really gave me an appreciation for being involved in the school district,” Pelter said on why he applied to be on the board. “I am just looking forward to the opportunity to serve the district and the residents.”
It also was announced that in November 2019, there will be two open seats on the board as Rhonda Rowland and Tom Kalb have chosen not to seek re-election. Rowland and Kalb both said that they were impressed with the applicants for the open board position and they feel comfortable leaving their positions and knowing that their replacements will be quality people who will serve the district well.
Also, at the meeting, the board discussed the district’s 2018 report card.
Wynford school district received an overall “C” grade. This grade is consistent with much of the rest of the county and the state and the board believed it looked good on the district.
In a breakdown of the grades, Wynford received an “A” in graduation rate, a “B” in progress and gap closing, a “C” in achievement, a “D” in improving at-risk K-3 readers and an “F” in prepared for success.
A “C” is considered meeting the standards by the Ohio Department of Education.
The board was assured that these grades aren’t bad as most of them were raised from last year and the standards and algorithms for finding the grades keep changing.
Board members said they look forward to continuing to better their school in the future, as there is always room for improvement.
In a special presentation, head football coach Gabe Helbert was given a plaque in celebration of the team’s 33 straight regular season conference wins obtained by the Royals before losing their first in the 2018 season.
Wynford’s soil judging team also was recognized after placing first in the state for the first time in school history and Wynford’s boys’ cross country team made regionals on Saturday in Tiffin.
