Lowe-Volk Park finds creative ways to take a look at all aspects of nature, and on Saturday, the topic for celebration was camouflage. For the second year, “Color Me Camo” took over the nature center as a myriad of examples of camouflage were demonstrated for participants to encounter and experience.

To experience the types of camouflage that can be found in nature, terrariums were set up just outside the nature center, holding examples of different creatures, such as snakes and turtles, set up in habitats in which they could adapt to blend. The kids then graded the animals on their camouflage abilities.

Park District Director Bill Fisher discussed the attractions at the event.

There were also walks through the woods that served as a scavenger hunt and during which kids would point out different forms of camouflage, and were encouraged to try to locate a stuffed coyote that had been placed prior to the event. Through this, the hope was to teach those involved to keep their eyes open to what could be seen in nature, even when it is hiding.

Fisher, who dressed up and got his face painted at the vent, said that “All in all, there were good times had by all.”
