MANSFIELD, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Buckeye Imagination Museum board of directors issued a statement on Saturday regarding the Love on a Mission prom that was initially planned to be held at their venue. In the statement, the board expressed their satisfaction in hosting the event but mentioned that they were not informed about the inclusion of drag performers in the prom.

The statement reads:

Dear community members,

“We would like to provide an update on the recent discussions surrounding our decision to rent the facilities of our museum space for an upcoming event, hosted by local non-profit Love On A Mission.

At the time the rental agreement was made the information that was provided to us about the event included a dance geared to students who don’t have a prom of their own to attend or wouldn’t feel comfortable bringing a same-sex partner to theirs. We did not know the nature of entertainment beyond that or the range of ages that would be invited.

The positive aspect that has emerged from this situation is the affirmation of our museum as a safe and welcoming place for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation.

We are proud to be a part of a community that supports and embraces diversity, and we do not turn our backs on anyone who seeks a space where they can express themselves without fear of discrimination or exclusion.

We understand that concerns have been raised about the age-appropriateness of certain elements of the event, including the initial plan to include Drag Queen performers known for their adult-themed names and performances.

As Love On A Mission at the time planned to keep some elements of the event in place, Buckeye Imagination Museum feels we are no longer the right facility rental for their event.

At this time, we are also taking steps to further ensure the safety and appropriateness of events hosted at our museum.

We are fine-tuning our rental agreements and policies to include parameters for events that will be open to minors and the public utilizing the museum’s space.

We want to emphasize that we are open to feedback that is constructive and helpful in creating a community where everyone feels like they have a seat at the table and is valued.

We believe in the importance of open dialogue and are committed to addressing any misunderstandings or apprehensions.

We encourage anyone with concerns to reach out to us directly, and we remain dedicated to engaging in meaningful conversations with all parties involved.

We want to express our gratitude to those who continue to support the Buckeye Imagination Museum and its mission.

Your support is instrumental in helping us inspire curiosity and understanding in all children, fulfilling our commitment to being a strong community partner, and maintaining our economic responsibilities as a small nonprofit.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to work towards a resolution that respects the concerns of our community while upholding our mission and values.

We remain dedicated to our mission of providing a safe and inclusive space for all members of our community and look forward to welcoming everyone to our museum.”
