MANSFIELD — The Mansfield Division of Police would like to announce that after being out of service for nearly 60 years, the Mansfield Police Motorcycle Unit has been reestablished to assist in Selective Traffic Enforcement in the city of Mansfield.

In 2016, the Motorcycle Unit was reestablished as a ceremonial unit where motor officers had the honor of participating in parades, funeral processions, and community events.

However, over the last several years the unit has worked to become an additional resource for making the roadways in Mansfield a safer place.

Motorists may now see the Mansfield Police Motorcycle Unit officers on patrol or stationery along roadways conducting traffic enforcement duties.

Motorcycle Unit officers will be operating one of two Harley Davidson Police Motorcycles the division acquired in 2016.

Each division motorcycle is clearly identified with Mansfield Police markings and emergency response equipment.

The motor unit officers will be wearing department approved safety equipment and uniforms which will clearly identify them as Mansfield Police officers.

The original motorcycle patrol was introduced to the city of Mansfield in the 1930s and in the 1960s the division added value to the division’s traffic enforcement section through selective traffic enforcement and accident response.

Motorcycles can navigate congested modern traffic and quickly get to accident scenes, in addition to the motor units’ ceremonial duties.

The public may now see motorcycle patrol units conducting traffic enforcement, traffic accident investigations, and school zone traffic enforcement in targeted areas where there are higher accident rates.
