Press release

The Ohio Department of Public Safety’s (ODPS) Motorcycle Ohio Rider Education Program registration began January 25, 2016. Those wanting to learn how to ride a motorcycle or refresh their motorcycle safety skills may register at www.motorcycle.ohio.gov for one of the $50 courses.

North Central State College will once again be a sponsor site for this program and classes begin March 31, 2016. Two different classes will be offered at North Central State College this year. They include:

Basic Rider Course, a 16-hour course designed for newer riders and those wanting to learn how to ride. No riding experience is necessary.

This course includes four hours of classroom instruction and twelve hours of practice riding divided into three days of training. The classroom training covers management of risk awareness and strategies to prevent crashes. The range training includes motorcycle familiarization, using the friction zone, starting, shifting and stopping, maneuvering in limited space, judging and negotiating curves and corners, obstacles and lane changes, avoiding hazards, stopping quickly, controlling speed and matching gears to speed.

Basic Rider Course – Returning Riders, an eight-hour/one-day course which is designed for those over 18 years of age who have been riding with a temporary permit for longer than one year (over 1,000 miles of experience) and for experienced riders returning to riding, with or without a motorcycle endorsement, after several years of not riding.

The two hours of classroom instruction include risk management and preparation and safety strategies. At the beginning of the 6 hour range instruction Students will be required to demonstrate sufficient skills in two basic control skill exercises to continue participation in the BRC-RR.

Students will go through familiarization with the training motorcycles, then must demonstrate sufficient skills in shifting (1st & 2nd gear) and stopping and also must perform a control skills exercise (offset weaves, clutch control) to the satisfaction of the instructors. Students unable to demonstrate sufficient skills in the first two exercises will be counseled out of the course and advised to register in the Basic Rider Course.

Students will then cover the more advanced skills portion of the Basic Rider Course curriculum.

Motorcycles are provided for the training. Successful completion of either course will allow the student to waive the skills test while applying for motorcycle endorsement placement on their Ohio Driver’s License. Students must have a Motorcycle Temporary Permit or a Motorcycle Endorsement for their driver’s license to participate in the class.

A complete list of all courses through June 2016 being offered at North Central State College is available at the Motorcycle Ohio Website, www.motorcycle.ohio.gov. Registration for the courses is done on the website. July to October classes will be added to the website later this spring.
