GALION — Andrea Mills once wanted to go into the field of advertising and marketing but after working as a state-tested nursing assistant, she changed her career direction.

“The nurses I worked with reminded me I am smart and good with people. They really encouraged me to become a nurse and I have never regretted it,” said Mills, who recently was named the director of nursing at Galion Pointe, located at 925 Wagner Ave, in Galion.

Mills is a graduate of Marion Technical College and has worked as a registered nurse for 17 years, most of those in home health, including as an administrator and clinical manager, and four years in an emergency department.

“I enjoy working with people and direct patient care, being one-on-one with patients. I love to hear their stories,” Mills said. “Every day is a good day when you get to know who they are.”

Mills took over the director of nursing position three weeks ago at the 45-bed facility.

“We have zero patients with COVID-19 currently but are purposely keeping a few beds open in a quarantine in case we need them,” Mills said. “We are testing new patients coming into the facility as well as staff.”

She said her goals in her new position are staff development and high-acuity long-term patient care.

“COVID has changed goals and the way we need to do things and plan for the future,” Mills said.

She said plans for an in-house bakery also are underway.

“We want people to be able to purchase fresh bakery items, including fresh donuts,” Mills said.

She said the facility offers some things that many others do not for long-term patient care.

“We have a physical therapist with a doctorate in physical therapy and our patients are provided with in-house therapy,” she said.

She said she is looking forward to ensuring the people living at Galion Pointe have the best quality of life possible.
