Only $1,500 separated the bids for Bucyrus’ 2017 mill and pave project, but the nod eventually went to a local company.
The Bucyrus Board of Control awarded the mill and pave bid to Bucyrus Road Materials Tuesday morning after it came in $1,466.21 under Findlay-based Helms and Sons Excavating. Bucyrus Road Materials submitted a base bid of $495,569, roughly $100,000 below the project estimate.
The 2017 mill and pave project includes Mansfield Street from Whetstone Street to the east corporation line; Auto Avenue and Penn Avenue; Mary Street from the bridge to Poplar Street; Dudley Street from Sandusky Avenue to Dunn Street; Whetstone Street for pavement repairs; Woodlawn Avenue from Whetstone Street to McKinley Avenue; East Street from Oakwood venue to Hopley Avenue; Prospect Street from Hopley Avenue to Southern Avenue; and Sears Street from Mansfield Street to Mary Street.

The Board of Control also opened bids for the Southern Avenue trunk sewer extension. The project, which was estimated at $2.28 million, received three bids. Underground Utilities of Monroeville submitted the lowest bid at $2,112,657 and an estimated 300 days for the project. Mansfield-based Elite Excavating estimated the longest project timeline with 365 days and entered a bid of $2,696,383. Helms and Sons Excavating of Findlay clocked in with the highest base bid of $3,210,551.67, but the lowest timeline of 210 days.
The Southern Avenue trunk sewer extension will install a 6,600-foot sanitary sewer system from Kaler Avenue to Whetstone Street. This will be the first phase of the sewer separation project at the south end of town.
