MANSFIELD — Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center recently was proud to host hundreds of middle school students as they battled it out to be the Academic Challenge champion.

Students compete as teams, answering questions about a wide range of topics including literature, fine arts, geography, history, math, and science.

Sixteen teams from Colonel Crawford, Crestview, Galion, Lexington, Mansfield City, Plymouth-Shiloh, Mansfield St. Peter’s, Shelby and Wooster participated in the 6th Grade Academic Challenge on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Wooster’s Edgewood Team A, comprised of Luci Dean, Brooklyn Chelakadan, John Ngunjirr, Aaron Vandergrift, and Sam Heller, captured the crown.

Lexington Team A with Jesse Halfhill, Alex Trolian, Aiden Johnson, and Addison Sigler came in second place.

Twenty-six teams from Crestview, Colonel Crawford, Galion, Lexington, Madison, Mansfield City, Plymouth-Shiloh, Shelby Sacred Heart, Shelby, Mansfield City Spanish Immersion and Wooster participated in the 7th/8th Grade Academic Challenge on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Wooster again came away with the victory. Their Edgewood team won first place with team members Kyia Walf, Shade Ellis, Isaac Nikkel, Jackson Stansifer, and Megan Kleinhenz.

Lexington’s Team A was the second-place team with Oden Bell, Jacob Halfhill, Kennedy Lamp, Grant Mentzer, Wyatt Miller, and Darcie Rinehart.

Leanna Ferreira, Gifted Student Consultant and coordinator of the Academic Challenge meets, said, “We are giving students an opportunity to celebrate the academics in a safe, yet competitive nature. It is a place where being ‘smart’ is celebrated in a similar environment to athletics.”

Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center provides specialized academic and support services to 10 school districts and over 17,000 students in Crawford, Morrow and Richland Counties. Client districts receive services from curriculum, gifted and special education consultants, speech pathologists, psychologists, special education teachers, occupational therapists and physical therapists.
