Riddle Me This on Saturday, October 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598

Can you follow your map, to find each checkpoint, while solving a nature-based riddle, and make it out of the woods before dark? This is a self-guided adventure offered by the Crawford Park District, but there will be volunteers along the way if you need some help. There will also be a shorter loop for younger participants or a larger loop for the more adventurous. Please call the Crawford Park District at 419-683-9000 to reserve a spot.

 Nature Hike on Sunday, October 18 at 2 p.m. at the Heckert Nature Preserve, 1601 State Route 19

Meet Crawford Park District Naturalist Warren Uxley to learn about the mature forest of Heckert.  A hike through the forest of the Heckert Nature Preserve will reveal a great deal about this habitat in Crawford County. Canoeing on Tuesday, October 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Neff Reservoir, State Route 98

Join Crawford Park District Naturalists Josh and Abby for a fall, evening paddle around Neff Reservoir. Learn some canoeing basics and take to the water, while enjoying trees in their fall colors! Archery Pumpkin Shoot on Thursday, October 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Unger Park, 1303 Bucyrus-Nevada Road 

Finishing out our Archery programming this year, we will have our pumpkin shoot! Join Crawford Park District Naturalists Lisa and Abby for a fun evening of shooting pumpkins with bows and arrows. Viewing the Night Sky on Saturday, October 24 at 7:15 p.m.at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598

Join members of the Crawford Park Astronomy Club as they share their knowledge and telescope skills with all who are interested in the celestial sights.

Some of the targets for fall are:  Jupiter – the largest planet in our solar system is ½ billion miles away, has 4 Galilean moons and over 60 other moons

Saturn – is 1 billion miles away, known for its beautiful rings, and has several moons

Mars – also known as the “Red Planet” will be rising in the west

m-13 – was discovered in 1714, is a Globular cluster 22000 light-years away, is 160 light-years across, and has a ½ million solar mass

m-51 – a Whirlpool Galaxy with a grand spiral design, can be found 37,000,000 light-years away, and was discovered in 1773 by Charles Messier

m-44 – discovered by Galileo in 1609, is a Beehive cluster, and only 500 light-years away

m-81 – also known as Bode’s Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy 11,000,000 light-years away and contains more than 200 globular clusters.

Nature at Night: Spider Search on Saturday, October 24 at 8:30 p.m. at Unger Park, 1303 Bucyrus-Nevada Road

Want a natural scare before Halloween? Join Crawford Park District Naturalist Abby for a night hike to search for spiders by finding their many glowing eyes at night, and learn why you don’t have to be afraid of them! Do you love nature and also love to read? With the abundance of books available for nature lovers, sometimes it is hard to choose the next great book to read. Infant Explorers: Leaves on Wednesday, October 28 at 5 p.m. at Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598

Your first instinct may be to bundle babies up and keep them indoors. However, research tells us that infants in outdoor spaces benefit from access to a wide variety of sensory stimuli which they just cannot experience indoors.
