CRESTLINE — Crestline Mayor Joy Miley filed a harassment complaint to the Crestline Police Department involving comments made on social media.
According to a report by CPD, Miley reported Doreen Whited made comments about her on social media.
In an interview with Crawford County Now, Miley said the comments were made on CCN’s Facebook page and she considered them slanderous.
She added she has hired an attorney and believed she should not make any additional comment beyond that.
According to the CPD report, the responding officer advised Whited to cease and desist contact with Miley in all forms including social media posts, per the instruction of his superiors.
During contact with Whited, she requested Miley be served a cease and desist as well, due to Whited feeling her employment was in jeopardy because of comments made to the principal. Whited told CCN she considered Miley speaking with the school’s principal and filing a report with CPD to be forms of intimidation and harassment.
Miley was instructed by the responding officer to not contact Whited as well.
Crestline St. Joseph Principal Dan Salvati confirmed Whited is an employee at the school and remains employed. He said he had heard what would be considered hearsay in the community about the incident.
“I haven’t taken it to heart because I don’t know if it’s true or not,” Salvati said.
After discussion with acting police chief Jeff Shook, the responding officer advised the matter was more civil than criminal.
The report said Whited referenced the first amendment regarding her comments. The officer agreed she had the freedom of speech, but due to it being a civil matter, advised Whited to speak to an attorney regarding her liability of the content of her comments.
Whited said she was given a verbal warning and given nothing in writing.
