For the second time in a week in Crawford County someone was struck by a falling tree while cutting wood. This time the accident was fatal.
The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 9-1-1 call at approximately 4:30 Saturday afternoon on Carey Road in Chatfield Township. The call indicated a tree had fallen on a man. First responders found Paul Vanpelt lying unconscious next to a fallen tree.
Vanpelt was declared deceased at the scene by Crawford County Coroner Dr. Michael Johnson. Vanpelt was cutting wood with family members, including his two young sons, at the time of the accident. Vanpelt is from Shiloh.
In addition to deputies from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, LifeStar EMS and the Chatfield Township Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene.
