BUCYRUS — A Bucyrus man appeared in Crawford County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday to enter a plea on two counts of sexual assault.

Daniel Prine pleaded guilty to one count of rape, a first-degree felony punishable with an indeterminate sentence of 15-years-to-life in prison and one count of gross sexual imposition, a third-degree felony punishable with up to five years imprisonment.

The assault involved a victim who was seven years old at the time of the crime.

While not related to the victim, Prine, 43, was living in the household when the child reported being touched by Prine. Prine admitted to digital, oral, and anal penetration of the child. He attempted intercourse but was unable to maintain an erection.

Common Pleas Court Judge Sean Leuthold allowed the rule of use of masks in the proceeding to be suspended for the purposes of sentencing. Leuthold noted the seriousness of the crime and wanted clarity for the record and to make sure all proceedings were clearly understood by the state and the defense.

Before sentencing, Leuthold asked for comments from the state, defense and Prine. Assistant Prosecutor Ryan Hoovler said he had nothing to add to his recommendation but said that he had been in continued contact with the victim and victim’s family. They were satisfied with the negotiation that would avoid a trial.

Defense attorney Jerry Thompson told the court, “This is a serious and difficult case to deal with. Mr. Prine has stepped up to the plate to take responsibility, thereby protecting the victim from further trauma and the state from an expensive trial. He has admitted his guilt. He voluntarily gave a statement of his transgressions. He has shown remorse.”

When asked if he had anything to say Prine, told the court that he knew he was wrong and deserved the sentence he would receive.

“These are always difficult cases when a child like this is involved,” Leuthold said. “This calls for a lengthy sentence. When you harm a child in Crawford County in a sexual way, there will be severe punishment.”

Leuthold sentenced Prine to 15-years-to-life in prison on the rape count and five years in on the gross sexual imposition charge. Prine will serve a full 20 years in prison before he will have the first opportunity at parole.

Leuthold also designated Prine a Tier III sexual offender, mandating that he must report to the sheriff’s office, in whatever county he resides, every 90 days for the rest of his life.
