Assistant City Prosecutor David Keller asked for bond in the amount of $750,000 for the man accused of assaulting Bucyrus Police Chief David Koepke last Friday. Municipal Court Judge Sean Leuthold did one better than that – times two.

Leuthold set bond for 23-year-old Jacob Laurence at $1.5 million on Monday. Laurence is being held at the Crawford County Justice Center. The next step up the legal ladder is arraignment in Common Pleas Court.

Laurence is charged with felony one assault of a police officer which carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years in prison. Koepke was trying to apprehend Laurence at the time of the assault at the CVS pharmacy where Laurence was allegedly trying to shoplift an energy drink. Koepke required medical attention including stitches and treatment for a concussion.

Laurence does have a felony record including a prison stay.
