BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—In preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is teaming up with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office to raise awareness about the dangers of drug-impaired driving. Under the banner “If You Feel Different, You Drive Different,” this initiative aims to keep the roads safe during the festive season.

Sheriff Scott Kent emphasized the importance of enjoying the holiday responsibly, stating, “We want our community to enjoy the holiday, but we also want safe drivers on the roads. This is the kickoff to a wonderful time of year, so don’t blow it by driving impaired. Driving under the influence of any impairing substance is deadly, and no one should ever take that risk.”

Ohio’s drug-impaired driving laws carry significant consequences for violators, reinforcing the message that impaired driving is not only dangerous but also costly.

The campaign stresses that regardless of the terminology used—whether feeling high, stoned, or wasted—individuals should refrain from getting behind the wheel. Research has shown that substances like marijuana can slow reaction times, impair cognitive performance, and affect a driver’s ability to maintain a steady lane position.

Even over-the-counter and prescription medications can have impairing effects, prompting a call for caution before driving after using any medication. In the event of drug impairment and being stranded with a vehicle, the campaign advises giving keys to a sober driver for a safe journey home. Friends are encouraged to intervene if someone appears about to drive under the influence, emphasizing that saving a life takes precedence over potential offense.

Designated drivers are reminded to stick to the plan and avoid using drugs, legally or illegally obtained. To ensure impaired drivers get home safely, various options are recommended, including designating a sober driver, calling a taxi or rideshare service, or utilizing community-based sober ride programs.

The campaign’s slogan, “If You Feel Different, You Drive Different,” serves as a reminder to the public to make responsible choices during the holiday season. Individuals are urged to report impaired drivers to local law enforcement promptly.
