Bucyrus lost a prominent member of its community Thursday with the passing of longtime attorney Richard L. Cory.

Cory, who died at Bucyrus Community Hospital at the age of 89, previously served as the Bucyrus City Solicitor and was honored by the Ohio State Bar Association District 5 in October for his 65 years as a law practitioner. He was also the longest practicing attorney in Crawford County.

After graduation from Ohio Northern University with a Bachelor of Law degree in 1951, Cory began his law career the following year with attorney Victor Vollrath. During his years as an attorney, he also worked with his son, David R. Cory, and current Ohio Supreme Court Justice Paul E. Pfeifer.

In addition to practicing law, Cory was a founding member of the Bucyrus Historical Society, served as Director of the Crawford County Board of Elections, and was a part of numerous community boards throughout his life, such as Bucyrus YMCA, Bucyrus Community Hospital, and First Federal Community Bank. Cory was also a 70-year member of the American Legion Post 181.

Cory is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carol Cory, three sons, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
