BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Bucyrus City Schools Summer Community Musical is set to take audiences on a magical journey this month with its production of the classic “The Wizard of Oz.” The show, featuring a diverse cast of over 40 local community members and a live dog named Oliver, will run from June 28-30 at the Bucyrus Elementary Auditorium.
The musical, directed by veteran Betsy Gerhart, is a delightful adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s beloved tale. It brings to life the most recognizable songs and moments from the 1939 film. Audiences can expect to hear classics like “Over the Rainbow,” “Munchkinland (Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead),” “If I Only Had a Brain/a Heart/the Nerve,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard (Follow the Yellow Brick Road),” “Jitterbug” and “The Merry Old Land of Oz.”
The story follows Dorothy Gale, played by Bailey Dixon, as she is swept away by a tornado from her Kansas farm to the magical land of Oz. Along the way, she encounters whimsical characters and braves many dangers, including the Wicked Witch of the West. To find her way home, Dorothy must follow the Yellow Brick Road to meet the Wizard in the Emerald City.
The cast includes community members, alumni, current students, teachers, and students from surrounding schools. Casey Yonts stars as Aunt Em/Glinda, while long-time performers Matt Feck, Deven Deskins, and Aaron Dixon appear as the Scarecrow, Tinman, and Lion, respectively.
“We are so excited to bring this show to life for an audience and take them over the rainbow,” said Gerhart. “With an amazing cast that ranges from 8-years-old to happily retired, we cannot wait to show this community our version of this iconic classic musical!”
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for students. They are available for purchase in advance at MB Subculture, 122 W Rensselaer St, by calling 419-617-1201 or at the door. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience a beloved classic brought to life by your local community.
