Dear Editor,

After last night’s Bucyrus City Council regular scheduled meeting, I feel that our city government is losing total control in functioning as a government body. No Quorum for conducting business for our city. The President of Council spoke that there were not the required number of council members present to start the meeting. He asked the media person to post on the website that there was no meeting because of no quorum. There was one person in attendance that spoke out about this, and wanted him to go live and state the reason for no meeting. Under Ohio Law if there is no quorum to conduct a public meeting, the government body can’t even convene or make any comments that would imply that the meeting is in session. That would be a violation of the law, and someone could file a complaint against the city. The member’s who were present: K. Fankhauser, J. Mee, K. Myers, and A. Sharrock. Along with the Interim Law Director B. Gobrecht, SSD T. Starner and our Mayor B. Truka. Who even came to this meeting with his walker in tow.

The other members of council who did not show were; V. Dishon ( who had a medical issue ), C. Mauritz ( unknown ), Z. Hickman (who was attending a music tribute concert in London, England ), who has also missed many committee meetings in the last several months. And C. Shiremen ( unknown reason ), she has missed several meetings in the last months. Could it be the Civil Protection Order that she filed against a local citizen and doesn’t want to come to meetings about this issue. Maybe it was the fact that this citizen filed a Civil Protection Order against Ms. Shiremen about one hour after she filed against this citizen. There is another good story about this that could be interesting in itself.

It seems like in the past several months that our city council can’t conduct business for its residents and take care of the matters that need to be addressed. Without saying, the city had no Law Director for a few weeks. Last night’s meeting had a lot of important issues that needed to be addressed. Mr. Gobrecht had a great report for the council, including important topics. First was, Community Improvement Corporation that was never started and the State of Ohio is threatening to designate the CIC “unauditable”. “I would like to avoid this at all cost”. Second, there are issues with the purchase of property next to the current fire station and the parking lot next to Wendy’s. He wants to “minimize any potential legal consequences”. Adding to this, the city has to pay for his time for attending his first meeting. Mr. Gobrecht, your report was outstanding in itself. Thank you !

How can our city government operate under these conditions, council members are elected officials who you voted for. They take an oath of office and get paid each month with taxpayers money, whether they show up or not. I would like to encourage the citizens of Bucyrus to call your elected officials and let them know how you feel ( City of Bucyrus webpage has each phone number and email address of your council representation ). In closing, all information and facts that I have written about is public knowledge and available to any citizen who wants to learn about your city government. Through; public records request , the City of Bucyrus webpage – Documents on Demand, Crawford County Clerk of Courts Office, Bucyrus City Council Clerk ( 419.562.6767 Ext.

238 if you need help ), Bucyrus City Facebook and Youtube videos on the website and basically any other local, state or federal government agencies. Most things are free, and some could cost you very little.

Respectfully submitted,

Greg White
