BUCYRUS — This Saturday, the main drag in downtown Bucyrus once again will be home to lappers.
A Bucyrus tradition that was renewed last summer is continuing this year with the city’s next lap night scheduled from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the main drag, Sandusky Avenue.
Tammy Knickel, one of the organizers for the planned lap nights, said that there was such a great turn out last year, more lap nights are planned for this summer.
“We had lots of positive feedback on the Bucyrus Laps Night Facebook page so we formed a small group to plan future lap nights.” Knickel said.
The group consists of Knickel and her husband, Dal, Brian and Kim Mollenkopf, Tim and Julie Bell and Ken and Lori Shuster.
“We went to Bucyrus City Council in August last year and was able to get permission for taking laps on the first Saturday of July, August and September,” Knickel said.
Knickel wants people to understand that lap nights are not the same as the annual car show in which classic car owners take laps through town.
“This is just people taking laps in whatever ride they have and socializing with each other like we used to do every weekend. We are bringing back a tradition,” Knickel said. “I love taking laps and seeing old friends and sharing the memories.”
Knickel said lap nights are bringing people together.
“This has also brought our class together, the Colonel Crawford 86ers,” Knickel said. “We had a potluck last year at Aumiller Park then took laps and later, had a bonfire after at Tim Bell’s house. It was a great time and so much fun catching up with each other. We are hoping other classes will do that this summer.”
Knickel said she is very glad she took the first step in organizing the lap nights.
“We were able to bring back an old tradition to Bucyrus. As a group, we are hoping this will be a new tradition every summer,” Knickel said.
