Go ahead and mispronounce Kassidy Stanford’s name. She doesn’t mind – she already won the ribbon.
Stanford, a member of the Mt. Zion Buckeyes 4-H Club, was named Grand Champion Meat Pen with her white mountain broilers.
“I didn’t really do anything special with them, I just fed and watered them like you usually do,” said a modest Stanford. “They’re pretty boring animals – they kind of just sit there, but they’re easy to show.”
Despite the ease of the project, Stanford was excited to be named champion.
“It was unbelievable; I didn’t expect to win it,” she said. “I know that the judge liked my birds, but I know after they announced the fifth place person I thought, ‘well, if I didn’t get fifth place, I’m not going to place at all.’”
Stanford was even amused when they mispronounced her name.
She also shows rabbits and took a woodworking project.
Emma Studer took home reserve champion in the turkey and broiler categories.
“Poultry is all for meat, the ones I take,” Studer, who also shows horses, explained. “I always have to make a weight limit and I’m always looking for a certain thing. With horses it’s just for a pet and the companionship you have with the animal.”
Studer also won the senior division of the poultry Skillathon.
