Ohio Governor John Kasich signed a bill into law Wednesday that will give school districts a little breathing room when it comes to making up school days. Kasich signed the legislation into law under the watchful eye of fifth-grade students from Stingel Elementary School in Ontario and Greensview Elementary in Upper Arlington.
The law grants schools four additional calamity days for the 2013-2014 school year as long as the school districts first make up four snow days through their contingency plans.
Kasich had first urged for the additional calamity days in January but the issue soon stalled after the House and Senate disagreed on how many days they should grant the school districts and how much time those districts needed to make up.
The final bill allows school districts to make up the days in 30-minute increments on the end of regular school days or through assigned “blizzard bags” and online lessons. Graduating seniors can also be excused from any make up days that fall after the school’s commencement ceremonies.
