MANSFIELD, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—In a world often marked by division and conflict, the upcoming Kaleidoscope: A Community Conversations Event offers a path to better communication and understanding. On Thursday, August 29, 2024, at 5:30 PM, the Renaissance Performing Arts Association will host acclaimed investigative journalist and New York Times bestselling author Amanda Ripley on the Renaissance Main Stage.
Ripley, known for her work in outlets like The Atlantic and The Washington Post, and her bestselling books, including “High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out,” will lead an engaging session on human behavior, conflict resolution, and the art of meaningful conversation. The event will feature group activities, demonstrations of the conversational technique ‘looping,’ and resources available to attendees during and after the event.
Exploring the Roots of Conflict
The Kaleidoscope event will dive deep into conflict dynamics, exploring not only how to resolve disputes but also the triggers and build-ups that lead to high conflict. Ripley’s interactive presentation will highlight key listening skills that have transformed her approach to both journalism and personal interactions. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice these skills in a fun, low-stakes environment, leaving the event equipped with new stories, vocabulary, and tools for navigating difficult conversations in all aspects of life.
“In communities all over America, it often feels like there are two sides and you have to pick one, which shouldn’t be the case,” Ripley said. Her book “High Conflict” delves into the ways everyday disputes can escalate into destructive, polarized feuds, creating an “us versus them” mentality. “The real problem is high conflict—a specific category of conflict that operates very differently from normal conflict. High conflict is the kind of conflict we’re seeing a lot of today,” she added.
A Unique and Insightful Experience
Jay Allred, Co-Founder/CEO of Richland Source and Source Brand Solutions expressed his enthusiasm for the event. “This Kaleidoscope event is easily the most fun and joyful one yet. We’re really focusing on having better conversations—even when we’re talking to folks with whom we disagree,” Allred said. Having worked closely with Ripley since 2017, Allred attests to the transformative impact of her teachings on his personal and professional life. “I have better friendships, business relationships, and I’m happier overall because of what I’ve learned from Amanda. I’m excited to share her work with our neighbors here in Ohio.”
