It’s been said that only the good die young, and that is definitely the case for a man named Jeff Dyer.
Dyer went to Colonel Crawford High School and graduated in 1988. While there, he dominated in football, basketball, and baseball. Not only was he the captain of each one of his sports teams, he was also the MVP of each of them. Dyer claimed the title All Ohio defensive back in football and still holds the career interception record.
Dyer was also extremely talented in baseball, so it’s no surprise that he had Major League Baseball teams looking at him in high school. During his baseball career, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Cleveland Indians scouted him. He continued on to play baseball in college, attending the University of Toledo on a baseball scholarship.
Dyer was offered an All State honor to play in a tournament for football. However, he was going on a trip to Florida and couldn’t play in the game. Instead of taking the honor, Dyer gave it up so that someone else could have the honor and could get a chance to play in the game.
“He was the type of guy that would give the shirt off of his back, he would do anything for you, for his friends, for his family. He was a very personal individual,” a friend of the Dyer family, Brett Degray, said.
“He was welled-liked by everyone. Everyone was his friend. It didn’t matter if you were an athlete or not an athlete, he was friendly to all. If he had five dollars, you had five dollars,” Ken Dyer, Jeff’s brother, added.
Dyer excelled in everything he did and was making a difference in the lives of all the people around him. His life was taking off when suddenly he tragically died after a drowning accident.
“He was a kind-hearted person. He was taken from us way too young,” Degray said.
Each year since his passing, the Jeff Dyer Memorial Scramble has been held at New Winchester Golf Course. With the funds that were raised, the family wanted to give back to the school. They created the Jeff Dyer Scholarship to give to kids who play multiple sports in high school and who are going to continue to play in college.
In order to continue Dyer’s legacy, scholarship recipients are carefully chosen. For students to be considered for the scholarship, they must possess a GPA of 3.0 or higher, they must be a multiple sport athlete, and they must be a leader both in and out of uniform.
Right now the scholarship is only given to male athletes, but the family wants to expand it to females as well. However, the funds currently only range from $1,500 to $2,000. Therefore, all proceeds of the scramble will go toward the Jeff Dyer Scholarship fund.
This year, the Fourteenth Annual Jeff Dyer Memorial Golf Scramble will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 12 at New Winchester Golf Course. The Scramble is put on by the Colonel Crawford Athletic Boosters and is now organized by Brett Degray. Businesses are more than welcome to sponsor this event and can contact Brett Degray.
The Dyer family would like to extend their thanks for all of the support that they have received over the years. They also want to make sure that it is clear that it is not a serious tournament. It was created for everyone to have fun. Despite your golfing skills, there is an award for everybody. They even have a trophy for the last place team, so they want to encourage anyone and everyone to come out and have fun.
The price for the three-person scramble format will be $35 per person, $105 per team, and $155 per corporate team with hole sponsorship included. Cost includes nine holes of golf, a cart, a meal following golf, and door prizes. Green Chances can be purchased between $1 and $5 on holes making it to the green in one shot. If the shot is made the contestant will win double their money back.
Each member of the winning team will receive a rotating trophy and a Colonel Crawford athletic pass for all 2015/2016 home athletic events.
The field is limited to the first 27 teams with all proceeds benefiting the Jeff Dyer Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to Colonel Crawford student/athletes for their success. Forms are available at the school’s website at http://www.cck12.org. or this link: http://www.colonel-crawford.k12.oh.us/images/2015Jeffdyermemorialgolf.pdf.
