GALION, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The First United Church of Christ in Galion is hosting a jazz concert on Sunday, April 28 at 6:00 p.m. as part of its music ministry. The concert, which will be held at the church located at 248 Harding Way West in Galion, will benefit the Disaster Care Bucket Program.

The concert will feature the music of the Shawshank Big Band, under the direction of Damian Boyd. The event is free and open to the public, with donations being accepted and split between the Mission Committee of the First United Church of Christ and the band.

The Disaster Bucket Program is an annual drive that provides cleaning supplies for disaster relief in Ohio. The program aims to fill as many five-gallon buckets with recommended cleaning supplies as possible, with each bucket valued at $75. The Mission Committee of the First United Church of Christ has set a goal to fill at least 24 buckets. Proceeds from this concert should allow the Committee to exceed its goal, especially given the recent storms in the area that have highlighted the need for these buckets.

The Shawshank Big Band is a part of the Mid-Ohio Jazz Orchestra, Inc., a non-profit organization formed to promote and commemorate big band music of the 1930’s, 40’s, and early 50’s. The Band, under the direction of noted area trombonist, band leader, and performer Damian Boyd, is comprised of talented musicians from across north central Ohio, including members from Wooster, Galion, and suburban Columbus. This marks the fifth benefit concert played by the band as part of the concert series.

The concert will feature the music of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, as well as selections made famous by Charlie Barnett, Glenn Miller, and others. “This is a great opportunity to hear a fine big band and support great local causes,” said Brian Treisch, a member of the band and longtime Galion resident.
