Common Pleas Court Judge Sean Leuthold’s response to repeat offenders has made a notable difference at the Crawford County Justice Center.

kentSheriff Scott Kent told county commissioners Tuesday morning that, for the first time in a long time, they have available bed space at the jail. There has been a decrease in the number of inmates housed in the male sections of the county jail; however, the facility remains at capacity with females.

“We are taking any out-of-county housing that is offered,” Kent said. Oftentimes, those prisoners come from Wyandot County and the Ontario and Shelby police departments. “We are taking some out-of-county stuff. It all depends on the home counties – how much space is available there and how much jail space is available at our office at the time they request it.”

Commissioner Doug Weisenauer how that trend was reflected statewide.

Kent said everyone was overcrowded.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office receives revenue for housing prisoners from outside the county.
