‘Tis the season for the ornaments to arrive and for the Bucyrus Student Council to fill the lobby of City Hall.

Student Council decorates City Hall 12-03-14 (2)Each year, members of the Bucyrus Student Council volunteer to decorate Bucyrus City Hall with ornaments made by their younger counterparts just down the street at Bucyrus Elementary School. The elementary students crafted the ornaments – from white snow owls to poinsettias to three-dimensional cardinals – and the student council members hung them from tree branches, garland, and walls.

“This is a group of students that are involved in Student Council at the high school, so clearly they do a lot of activities around the school and help with events related to student government,” said co-advisor Kevin Fourman. “But when the Mayor’s Office called here, the officers felt it would just be an extension of their school responsibilities but also work with the community. And what a better way to do that than come here to City Hall and helping to decorate the trees.”

Bailey Plumley, a sophomore at Bucyrus High School, is no stranger to this student council tradition. He volunteered for the duty last year and returned for a second go-round.

“It’s fun,” Plumley said. “You get to get out of school and come to City Hall. It’s nice to see a place like this and put decorations in it.”

Plumley said the annual tradition was volunteer-based.

“We just come and decorate the trees. It’s pretty fun to put Christmas decorations up in a place that’s not your own house,” Plumley said with a laugh.

“I think it’s important for us to get involved in the community and help each other out since we’re the student council,” said senior Nicole Tuttle. “So that we can help these people in our community – that’s what we’re all about.”

“I love Christmas,” Tuttle added. “I just decorated the tree at school yesterday.”
