The T & OC Train Station, 700 E. Rensselaer St., Bucyrus, Ohio, is back in the business of entertaining just in time to celebrate Memorial Day by hosting Hobo Day at the Station Peddlers Market Saturday, May 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Bucyrus Preservation Society hosts the market each year on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.

Karen Scott, Hobo Day Chairperson, says there will also be lots of great food, entertainment, and vendors and crafters. The Aero Explorers Troup is coming with bratwurst sandwiches. There will be baked goods and Bob Price will again be setting up his kettle to make kettle corn. Real hobos will be on hand to welcome visitors as well.

Rob Neff is in charge of entertainment and is arranging for a variety of talented groups. If you would like to perform, contact Neff at 419-562-6797.

The Bucyrus Preservation Society has had in place a “memorial brick” program which has allowed people in the community and elsewhere to purchase a brick to honor someone that has a railroad background, a loved one, or to put the family name at a National Historic site. These bricks will be on display at Hobo Day, and someone will be there to take orders.

Over the years, the society has salvaged wood and other items from many schools, churches, and homes that have been razed and have incorporated these items in the stations and on the station grounds. Docents will be on hand to further tell of the great improvements that have occurred over the year and of future additions.

The group would welcome new members that day to help “Protect Our Past for the Future.” In lieu of the collection of dues, the association only asks for 20 hours of volunteer work at the station over the year.

Scott also mentions that there is no admission charge and the society is inviting the community to attend this Memorial Day event. The Boy Scout Troop 101, sponsored by the K of C, will be parking cars. The Plymouth Street Station will also be open to the public. It holds the gift shop with items related to the railroad. If you are a vendor or crafter and would like to participate, please contact Karen Scott, Hobo Day chairperson, at 419-562-1110 for more information.
