BUCYRUS — Emergency crews were called to a material spill on a state highway Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 1:10 pm, a roughly 200-foot span of gray sludge was reported to be scattered across the southbound lane of Ohio 98, just south of the US 30 junction.

Liberty Township Fire Department Captain Chad Wagner said, “Prior to arrival, we were notified by dispatch that it was possibly lime water being hauled out of the (Bucyrus water) treatment plant. Arrived on scene and that’s what it was…lime sludge.”

According to Wagner, it is not hazardous.

“It’ll get dried out and crushed up and applied on farmer’s fields.”

Wagner added that the vehicle responsible for the spill was not yet known and, “did not stick around.”

Along with LTFD, responding agencies included the Bucyrus Fire Department, Bucyrus Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio Department of Transportation and crews from the City of Bucyrus.
