Two professional speakers have signed on for the OhioHealth MedCentral Endocrinology’s D-Feet Diabetes Health Fair at the Richland Mall on April 26. The educational event will take place at the mall’s center court from 12 noon to 5 p.m. It precedes the 2 p.m. 5K Walk/Run or one mile walk on April 27 at Ontario High School’s outdoor track facility. Proceeds from the event benefit the MedCentral Diabetes Education Scholarship Fund.
The speakers are Amy Hayes, a diabetes educator, and Sean Busby, a professional backcountry snowboarder with Type 1 diabetes. Their appearances are sponsored by Sanofi and OmniPod, two drug companies. The health fair also will feature tables from local medical practices.
Hayes became an A1C Champion to help others through her experiences as a person living well with diabetes. Her message will urge listeners to try to make good choices and stick to their treatment plan. She says there will be ups and downs, but that’s what it takes to manage diabetes.
Busby travels the world exploring remote corners of the globe on snowboarding expeditions. While training for the 2010 Olympics, he received a complicated diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. He founded Riding on Insulin, a non-profit to honor all kids who have inspired him to keep on living. He graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in health promotion and education, with an emphasis on diabetes.
