More entertainment as well as chicken dinners were served up on the second day of New Washington’s Hatchery Festival.
Festivities for Friday kicked off at 4 p.m. with rides opening as well as chicken dinners being served.
“This year we have free rides for the Kiddie Tractor Pull, and it is free for anyone who wants to pull, and it is a sanctioned pull,” Gerry Wurm said.”So people can be able to go onto higher levels, and maybe go on to the national competition.”
While the John Kennedy Band was playing at the Gazebo at 6 p.m., the Crawford County Young Professionals were holding a Cornhole Tournament to the side of the main stage.
Ten teams participated in the tournament,with half of the proceeds from the tournament will go towards the Crawford County Young Professional’s scholarship fund.
“One of the other reasons that we hold the cornhole tournament is so bring people from Crawford County that may not have ever been to New Washington to check out the festival some of the other activities and the consessions,” Andrea Presler said.
Also celebrating its tenth anniversary during the Hatchery Festival, the New Washington Historical Society Museum was open for visitors to view pieces of New Washington’s past.
“We have a few new Hatchery Catalogs that were donated this year, though the bulk of the hatchery items were donated from the town’s centennial in 1974,” Joe Blum said
At its peak New Washington had more than 15 hatcheries in operation shipping upwards of 80,000 baby chicks a day. The Rainbow Hatchery, the last hatchery in New Washington, closed its doors in 1992.
The Hatchery Festival wraps up on Saturday with a motorcycle poker run at 9 a.m., a parade at 5 p.m., and a 5 K run at 7 p.m. At 10 p.m. the firework display closes out the 2014 Hatchery Festival, with the drawing for the Harley Davidson Following the firework display.
