Many gardeners often ask what exactly is a rain garden? Rain gardens are simply landscaped areas that are designed to collect a predetermined amount of water and store it for a short period of time allowing it to soak into the ground. Rain gardens prevent the immediate runoff of storm water, allowing it to recharge into the soil. They are planted with water-loving plants that can tolerate being wet for brief periods of time. Rain gardens can easily be worked into an existing landscape and are simple to install.
The Crawford Soil and Water Conservation District has grant funds available for homeowners in Bucyrus to install a rain garden on their property. Approved participants are eligible for up to $500 reimbursement for installing a rain garden. For more information on this grant or on installing these rain gardens contact the Crawford SWCD at 419-562-8280.
