It was going once, going twice, and sold on Saturday as the old wing of the Colonel Crawford High School held an auction ahead of the abatement project.
The auction began at 11 a.m. and sold everything from old desks to projectors and even four buses. Held at Colonel Crawford High School, the sale brought out curious minds hoping to flip their purchase for a few extra bucks, make use of old equipment, or purchase a memory keepsake from their past as an Eagle.
Former Colonel Crawford drama coach Betsy Gerhart purchased a newsstand to be re-commissioned at her store M.B. Subculture.
“To get some stuff for our business downtown, and some chairs for theater, and pretty much what we are looking for is furniture.” Gerhart said. “We purchased an old magazine rack which we will put children’s comics in.”
When she first worked at Colonel Crawford as a secretary, Margaret Hoyles needed a desk light for her office. When she retired the light stayed at the school, but on Saturday Hoyles was reunited with her desk light.
“When I started here as secretary I brought it in because I needed a lamp, and I left it,” Hoyles said. “And so I bought it back.”
Hoyles also purchased a trophy that a friend had won for the school, and planned on presenting it to him.
Barb Koschnick attended the auction to take one last look at the Colonel Crawford High School before the abatement.
“My kids went here, my grandkids are going here, and it’s kind of sad,” Koschnick said.
At 1:30 p.m. those who may have wanted to take a break from the auction were welcome to the open house of the new high school wing connected to the William and Hannah Crawford school building. As curious minds wandered the halls of Colonel Crawford’s future, homemade ice cream was served as a treat.
Rick Fogal was the auctioneer at Saturday’s sale. While the bulk of the funds will most likely go towards covering abatement costs, discussion of where the monies from the auction will be spent will take place at a future Colonel Crawford Board of Education meeting.
