Galion High School senior Jacob Bash has been named a finalist in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Certificate of Merit from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, has been presented by High School Principal Ron Williams to this scholastically talented senior.
In addition to an outstanding academic career, Jacob has been extremely involved in the performing arts serving as section leader of the percussion section and playing snare drum with the Tiger Marching Band since 8th grade. Most notably, Bash was chosen to perform with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band during the 88th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. He is also a member of the Galion High School National Honor Society.
“I am really grateful to be able to have the academic ability to pursue this kind of thing,” Bash said. “Both of the colleges I am considering are sponsor-schools of the National Merit Scholarship Program. Either of my top two schools has the option to offer me a substantial scholarship because I am a National Merit Finalist.”
More than 15,000 finalists are now being considered for one of 8,000 National Merit Scholarships. As a National Merit Finalist, Bash has placed among the top one percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
“After high school, I plan on pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering,” Bash said. “My top two college choices are the University of Cincinnati and Case Western Reserve.”
“On behalf of the Board of Education and the entire Galion City School District, I want to congratulate Jacob for earning the distinction of National Merit Scholarship Finalist,” Superintendent Mark Stefanik said. “He is one of the top students at Galion High School and in the United States. I applaud Jacob’s dedication to the pursuit of excellence.”
