Everyone was all smiles Thursday when Mayor Tom O’Leary welcomed the latest edition to what he jokingly called the Galion International Food Court.
Michael Fender’s Papa John’s pizzeria in the Galion plaza on Portland Way North officially opened its doors with a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday morning. It’s a new venture for Fender who spent 14 years in the Air Force National Guard.
“I’m just trying to get out on my own and start a new business,” Fender said.
Asked why he chose Papa John’s, he said he was aware that Galion was a targeted area of expansion for the company. What made it even easier to come to Galion is that Fender and his wife Gabrielle are very familiar with the community. Gabrielle is originally from the Galion and the couple lived in town for eight years.
The Fenders have three children, two daughters and an infant son.
“I have to say the response that we’ve gotten so far, knowing that better ingredients do make better pizza,” Fender said with a smile when asked why he’s so excited to open the store. “People that haven’t tried Papa John’s, they’re excited to try it. And the people that have had it are excited to have it again, so we’re excited.”
Fender said the store is a carryout and home delivery operation with approximately 25 employees at the current time. He added that they are always looking for good, qualified delivery people.
The menu includes Papa John’s pizza, wings and desserts. Papa John’s phone number is 419-468-7272.
