Galion High School students are learning more than Spanish this week in Ms. Molly Fairchild’s classes. Fairchild is focusing her Spanish lessons on random acts of kindness to help students focus on how they can help others. This week, Feb. 9-15, also marks the annual Random Acts of Kindness Week.
Fairchild, who is pursing a Master’s degree in school counseling, is incorporating a variety of kindness discussion topics in her classes. Issues students are discussing range from kindness and positive behavior, to Internet safety and social media.
“Each of my students are required to perform one random act of kindness this week or next,” Fairchild said. “I already had planned to talk about kindness this week and just learned that my lesson plans coincide with Random Acts of Kindness week. My hope is that they will incorporate acts of kindness into their daily lives.”
In addition to performing one random act of kindness, students are required to document their acts with photographs that Fairchild plans to have them share during class. She is also utilizing technology in her kindness lessons through Padlet, a free collaboration website.
“I’m using Padlet as a resource for my students to help them with ideas for their random acts of kindness,” Fairchild said. “The website is a great tool because students, through the One-to-One computer program offered in the Galion City School District, are able to access resources anytime they are in the High School or have an internet connection.”
“I want to commend Ms. Fairchild for her skill in incorporating many diverse topics into the Spanish curriculum at Galion High School,” Superintendent Mark Stefanik said. “I’m excited to learn more about the positive impact from the many random acts of kindness performed by the students.”
