There is a vacancy on the Galion City School District Board of Education due to the resignation of Heath Watkins. The board must begin the process to replace Watkins and name a replacement within 30 days.

heath watkins (1)Board President Dennis Long said Watkins, who was in his first term, resigned from the board effective November 24, 2014. The newly appointed school board member will serve until December 31, 2015. An election will then be held in November 2015 to fill the unexpired term of the seat until December 31, 2017.

Watkins was elected effective January 1, 2014 for a four-year term, and cited personal reasons for his resignation.

Citizens interested in being considered for appointment to the Galion City School District Board of Education should submit a letter expressing their interest to the Board of Education no later than 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16. According to the Ohio School Boards Association, people serving on school boards in Ohio must be district residents and registered voters.

Letters may be sent to the Galion City School District Board of Education, 470 Portland Way North, Galion, OH 44833. Applicants may also email their letter of interest to long.dennis@galionschools.org. Long stated the board will review all applications and decide on the replacement at its December 18 meeting.

The Galion City School District serves 1,856 students in four buildings in Galion from Crawford, Morrow and Richland counties.
