GALION- The Galion School District Board of Education heard from students from various organizations during the regular board meeting Tuesday evening.

Galion Teen Institute members Clay Karnes and Sari Conner said their group is a youth-led program for students who are drug-free and is designed to teach them how to be better role models for their peers and for themselves in general.

Conner and Karnes spoke events the group held this year, including powderpuff football, Volleybro, Sixth Grade Day, Freshman Day and other events.

They said that Freshman Day and Sixth Grade Day were days in which upperclassmen spent the day with those grade levels, talking with them about topics, such as self-esteem, bullying and the dangers of vaping and weed. These activities were held in order to get the students more involved with not just T.I., but with each other in a positive way.

Caleb Strack, a member of Teen Green, talked about the school’s recycling program. He said the group focused mainly on two different projects: a crayon and marker drive and the Energy Carnival.

“For the marker drive, students were asked to bring in old crayons and markers in order to be sent to Crayola to be recycled into new materials. The drive ran from the first week of school to October, and there were 18 pounds of markers and 13 pounds of crayons collected,” Strack said.

The other big event for Teen Green was the Energy Carnival. A few members of the club taught first through fifth graders how to recycle and reuse everyday products.

The last club to have a representative speak to the board was the Key Club. The Key Club is a student-led service organization that works to build character and develop leadership.

Kate Schieber talked about different events the club did this year, such as a 5K for UNICEF and Flying Horse Farms in Mount Gilead. They also helped organize Right to Read Week.

The board enjoyed a song from the Galion Symphonic Choir. The choir received a superior rating at a recent competition.
