With many schools in the area exceeding their calamity days the Galion City School District Board of Education met Tuesday morning to discuss possible avenues to make up for school time lost.
Currently needing to make up six calamity days, the Galion Board of Education approved two motions during their special board meeting Tuesday Morning. The first motion carried is to allow the school to use Blizzard Bag days to make up for up to three future calamity days that the school uses this school year, the second motion called for the school to be in session on President’s Day, as well as the Monday after Easter in order to recover two of the six calamity days.
Galion City Schools Superintendent Mark Stefanik explained.
“With the adding of two days we have addressed two calamity days that have already happened, and with the Blizzard Bag decision we have addressed the next three calamity days that may happen, and so that gives us a little bit of a cushion before we have to start adding extra days at the end of the year,” Stefanik said.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich just this week asked legislators and the State Board of Education to provide some relief for excess calamity days for this year only.
With four more days to make up the school is considering pushing back graduation by one week in order for Galion seniors to meet their attendance days needed to graduate.
The Galion City School District Board of Education will hold a public hearing on the graduation date at the start of their Feb. 6 work session meeting.
