The team championship trophies for the 2016 Crawford County Track Meet left the Galion tent, but only for a photo opportunity with the Tigers as they swept the county track meet for the second consecutive year.

With a score of 204 points the Lady Tigers completed a three-peat outscoring the nearest opponent by 41 points. On the boys side Galion outscored their nearest opponent by 32 points for the repeat of county champions. Colonel Crawford finished in second place with 163 points for the Lady Eagles, and 156 points for the Eagles.

Galion Coach Todd Roston explained that winning first in the county is a stepping stone in the bigger picture of the teams goals.

“To beat the other teams in the county feels good. We have some good teams in the county, Colonel Crawford they have a great program right now, so to go out and beat them in both boys and girls is nice,” Roston said. “We are building on this with the MOAC and hopefully we can win the MOAC again on the girls’ side, and we got second on the boys side so that is something we are working towards. You know we want to advance as many people to state as we can, those are some of our bigger team goals. But I feel that it was a good meet for us in the weather.”

While the Galion Boys won the overall meet Galion’s Drake Barnett had to share MVP honors with Colonel Crawford’s Chad Johnson.

With first place finishes in the 800 (2:04.75), 1600 (4:45.61), and 3200 (10:26.72) Johnson explained how it felt being named Co-MVP with Barnett.

“It’s pretty cool it is definitely a goal of mine to be the best, and do what I can to win,” Johnson said.

With first place finishes in the 100 (11.03), 200 (22.80), and 400 (52.04) Barnett who claimed MVP honors last year explained how it felt to receive the honor two years in a row.

“Two years in a row that is pretty nice,” Barnett said. “I did a lot of training and preparation for this so it feels good when that pays off.”

Lady Tiger Sydney Hunt was happy to exit her final county track meet as the MVP in the Girls Running event.

“It feels pretty good because it’s my senior year, and I am going out with a bang,” Hunt exclaimed.

Hunt finished first in the 100 (13.12), second in the 200 (27.55), and second in the 400 (1:05.52).

Galion’s Marisa Gwinner took the girls field MVP honors for the second year in a row by finishing first in the Long Jump (16’4.75”), High Jump (5’), and fourth in the pole vault (6’6”). Gwinner explained that she hopes that there will be more MVP’s to come in her high school career.

“Last year as a freshman I won it too, so having two years in a row is really good, and I am really looking forward to trying to get it four years in a row.”

Buckeye Central’s Brice Brenneman took home the boys field MVP honors after finishing second in the Long Jump (20’02.5”) and High Jump (5’10”).

The meet was originally supposed to be held at Galion’s track however due to renovations the event was moved to Bucyrus.
