The Galion Primary School has launched a new building-wide recycling program for the 2016-2017 school year.

This program is aimed at allowing students to lead the program throughout the school year. Interested students completed applications to be a Building Leader. A total of 12 students were selected to serve as building leaders.

The 2016-2017 student recycling leaders include: Jaden Harrelson, Destiny Blue, Jersey Riddlebaugh, Joshua Harris, Noah Conrad, Destiny Harney, Jamesen Glew, Braelyn Llewellyn, Wyatt Williams, Teagan Prince, Cameron Fullen and Carter Fairchild.

“Student leaders are required to wear badges each week identifying them as the leaders of the recycling program,” said Primary School Principal Cindy Voss. “Students utilize clipboards and check sheets to ensure recycling is picked up throughout the building each week.”

Once all items are collected from staff member’s classrooms, students sort the recyclable items into six different barrels for the custodial staff to remove. The program launched September 23, and the barrels were emptied twice during that first day.

“The first goal of this new program at the Primary School is to show students the benefits of recycling,” said Galion Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “Ultimately, we are working to improve the soft skills of our students and help them learn how to work more independently.”

The student-driven program is overseen by Primary School building custodian Walt Mullins and Principal Voss. The Primary School will continue to explore new ways for students to engage in different leadership activities.
