The Galion City School District Board of Education approved a resolution during its regular meeting to take next steps required to purchase real estate adjacent to the school campus Sept. 15.
The resolution authorized the Board President, Superintendent and Treasurer to negotiate a purchase agreement on behalf of the Board for the acquisition of approximately 17.6079 acres of real property located west of Hesby Drive from the Ruth B. Hesby Estate.
“This is the first in a series of many steps toward acquiring these parcels for several projects that will ultimately benefit both the school district and the Galion community,” said Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “We are going to start the process of surveying the land and taking soil borings, along with a title search and other necessary steps, on both parcels of land to move us closer towards acquisition of the property.”
A larger than normal audience of community members attended the public input portion of the meeting. The overwhelming majority were in favor of the district purchasing the parcels of land.
“I want to thank the community for coming out tonight and sharing their thoughts, ideas and opinions,” said Grubbs. “Our ultimate responsibility is to the Galion community, and we want to ensure we are good stewards of the funds and facilities they provide for our students and staff.”
The Board passed all other agenda items as presented. The next regular Board of Education meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Galion Middle School computer lab Thursday, October 20.
