A deal gone wrong that eventually ended in a handshake still resulted in a man being sent to prison Wednesday.

Thirty-year-old David Greene of Galion pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery in Crawford County Common Pleas Court, a first-degree felony that carries a maximum sentence of 11 years in prison. The facts surrounding Greene’s case, however, led Judge Sean Leuthold to be slightly lenient in the recommended sentence.

Greene was involved in a money dispute with another man and lost his temper, Leuthold explained. He added that Greene “made a terrible mistake” when he took a gun to get the money from the man. Despite the two men shaking hands after the altercation, charges of aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon were brought again Greene, who has a criminal record.

“As aggravated robbery goes, this is not the most serious form of the crime,” Leuthold stated after admonishing Greene that he cannot “go brandishing weapons to collect a debt.”

“You’ve made some mistakes,” Leuthold said. “This is a big one.”

As part of his agreed sentence, Greene received five years in prison on the aggravated robbery charge and had the carrying concealed weapons charge dismissed. Green must also pay a $5,000 fine and will be subject to five years of mandatory post-release control.
