Press release
Fifth grade students started the annual Socktober clothing drive with a big goal to collect more pairs of socks in one year than had been collected the previous two. Ten days before the end of October, the students were less than halfway to their goal of collecting 1,000 pairs.
With the help of several anonymous monetary donations and several hundred pairs of donated socks in the final days of October, the Galion Intermediate School is proud to announce that they have exceeded their goal and collected 1,008 pairs of socks!!
“This year was absolutely amazing,” said fifth grade teacher Paula Prince. “We set a pretty big goal and the students, their families and our community joined together to help us achieve this awesome feat!”
Every night, more than 600,000 people in the United States live on the streets. The program’s creator, Brad Montague, developed the idea to prove that even a small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make big difference in the lives of the homeless.
“This entire idea started with a video our students watched three years ago from YouTube star Kid President,” said Prince. “Our entire building was involved in this year’s drive, and I am very grateful for everyone who donated.”
The top three classes collecting socks this year at the Intermediate School included: Mrs. Marsha Garverick (158 pairs); Mrs. Kristi Jackson (179 pairs); and Ms. Prince (207 pairs). The month-long clothing drive has grown to involve events in all 50 states and on all seven continents.
“I am so proud of our students and their families for their help in making this year’s Socktober drive such a success,” said Intermediate School Principal Alex Sharick. “The outpouring of support for those less fortunate proves that we have great kids, great families and a great community in Galion.”
