GALION—The Galion History Center is eagerly anticipating an exhilarating summer season in 2023, as it gears up to offer regular weekly open hours and introduce two exciting new tours at the renowned Brownella Cottage. Visitors are in for a treat as they explore the rich history and captivating stories of Galion.

This summer, the Galion History Center will unveil the Brownella Cottage Complex, located at 132 S. Union St., and the newly established Hayden-Helfrich Annex Museum at 331 E. Railroad St. These two locations will be open on a rotating basis every Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Admission for adults will be $7, while children aged 6 and above can enter for $5. Children under five will enjoy free admission. Although the Thursday evening tours will be self-guided, visitors can arrange private guided tours by contacting the Galion History Center office at (419) 468-9338.

Brownella Cottage, an exquisite Victorian home constructed in 1887, will captivate visitors with its original furnishings. The house was once the residence of the notorious Bishop William Montgomery Brown and his wife Ella. Guests will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the splendor of the era as they explore the historical significance of this remarkable abode.

Hayden-Helfrich Annex Museum:

The Hayden-Helfrich Annex Museum, housed in a converted commercial building, will feature an impressive collection of oversized artifacts that highlight Galion’s vibrant history in industry, business, and education. This museum promises to provide visitors with a fascinating glimpse into the town’s past.

Exciting news awaits history enthusiasts and families as the Galion History Center introduces two new tours at Brownella Cottage. Starting June 1st, a family-friendly scavenger-hunt style tour will be available, adding a delightful twist to the regular house tour. Visitors of all ages will be given a list of artifacts to locate within the house, creating an engaging and interactive experience. The scavenger hunt tour offers two difficulty levels, ensuring enjoyment for everyone. Regular admission pricing applies.

Another thrilling addition is the Red Bishop Tour: The Path to Heresy, set to launch in audio tour format on June 29th, during the regular 6:00-8:00 p.m. open hours at Brownella Cottage. To embark on this immersive journey into the life of Bishop Brown, visitors will need a smartphone and headphones or earbuds. The Red Bishop Tour delves deep into Bishop Brown’s career in the Episcopal Church, his evolving political and religious beliefs, and the infamous Heresy Trials. Prior to undertaking the Red Bishop Tour, visitors who have never been to Brownella Cottage are strongly advised to take the general house tour. The Red Bishop Tour will also showcase never-before-seen artifacts, enhancing the understanding of Galion’s “Bad Bishop Brown.” Regular admission pricing applies.
